Volunteer Spotlight: George Schmatz

Retired electrician George Schmatz feels a great sense of accomplishment giving back to his community as a volunteer firefighter and fire commissioner at Gordons Corner Fire Company since 2001.

“I joined to be involved in my community. I was previously a volunteer firefighter in Aberdeen and Edison as well,” said George.

As a fire commissioner, George plays a vital role in ensuring the safety and well-being of Manalapan Township’s residents and visitors. He is responsible for formulating a budget for the fire district and submitting it to the state for review and approval, fostering community engagement through various safety initiatives and events, as well as other responsibilities.

After suffering a work-related injury, George was forced to put active firefighting behind him. George remained active in the operations and training, and even helped drive the apparatus when needed.

“There is no way I could walk away from my second family, so I do what I can to stay involved,” said George.

Amongst the various events George helps coordinate for Gordons Corner Fire Company as a fire commissioner, the Feast of San Gennaro is his favorite.

“We do a big feast every year at the fire house, and that’s been my claim to fame here,” George added.

As a retiree, George finds himself spending almost all of his free time at the fire company and getting the word out about volunteer opportunities. Gordons Corner is a 100% volunteer fire company, entirely dependent upon courageous locals. No prior experience is needed to join; training and gear are provided to volunteers for free.

“The more people that get involved in Gordons Corner Fire Company, the better it will be for everyone,” George stated.
