Volunteer Spotlight: Nick Macchio

If there was one thing that Manalapan native Nick Macchio, 28, has always known for certain, it was that he would become a firefighter. Ever since he was a little kid, he envisioned himself springing into action and being a hero for someone in their time of need. The moment he turned 16, he did just that by joining Gordons Corner Fire Company, a decision he claims to be his best one yet.

“The environment in the firehouse is one big family. It truly is a brotherhood,” he says.

After joining in 2013 as a junior firefighter, Nick climbed the ranks and was appointed captain on January 1, 2024. As captain, Nick is in charge of scheduling all of the training drills and ensuring that members are up-to-date on all of their certifications.

When the fire alarm sounds and it’s time to respond, Nick must immediately determine what type of call they are responding to and the assignments of other firefighters entering the scene. A skill that he has perfected throughout his 11-plus years at Gordons Corner is thinking quickly and improvising when needed.

“You never know what could happen in a fire scene and you always must be ready for anything to be thrown your way,” Nick stated. “Being a volunteer has allowed me to give back to the community and help someone in need, and there truly is no better feeling.”

When he’s not training or responding to calls, Nick works full-time for a construction company as a project manager. In his free time, he enjoys being in the water with his girlfriend and family.
