Volunteer Spotlight: Nick Panza
In the midst of the pandemic, Nick Panza, then 16, was looking for a way to get out of the house and get involved in the community. He decided to join Gordons Corner Fire Company as a junior firefighter.
“When I joined, I had no idea that I was going to end up wanting to become a volunteer firefighter, but that’s all I ever want to do now,” said Nick.
As a junior firefighter, Nick learned fire safety skills from the experienced, knowledgeable firefighters at the company and assisted at the scene of emergencies. Now, with two years of volunteering under his belt and recently having turned 18, Nick is working toward becoming a certified firefighter.
Despite having no ties to the volunteer fire service, Nick credits Gordons Corners members and state-of-the-art training for helping himself, and other volunteers, quickly adapt and integrate into the organization.
“It was easy to form relationships and gain skills as a junior firefighter. I joined not knowing anyone, but I have met friends that I will have forever now,” he said. “It’s very family-oriented. Everyone is really friendly and looks out for each other.”
Nick will be attending New Jersey City University in the fall to study fire science and national security. When he is not in school or responding to calls, he referees ice hockey games, plays lacrosse and spends time with family and friends.
For anyone interested in joining Gordons Corner Fire Company, no prior experience is needed to join. Training and gear are provided to all volunteers, and roles available within the organization include firefighter, junior firefighter, fire police and auxiliary member.
“You’ll meet lifelong friends here and you won’t regret it,” Nick added.
