Volunteer Spotlight: Rebecca Alouf

Women looking to learn new skills and positively contribute to the community in an inclusive, welcoming environment can draw inspiration from Rebecca Alouf, 21. Rebecca joined Gordons Corner Fire Company in 2019 and has had nothing short of a life-changing experience in the male-dominated field.

“It’s the only place where I feel like I am incredibly welcomed,” said Rebecca, “It’s an amazing experience, and Gordons Corner is so incredibly open to everyone and anyone who wants to make a difference.”

In addition to being a firefighter, Rebecca is the organization’s assistant treasurer. She assists the treasurer with banking and finances, along with ensuring that the fire company is trained and well-staffed.

Rebecca joined at 16 after hearing her brother Josh come home and constantly relish about his experiences as a volunteer firefighter and the family atmosphere at the station. Now her brother, who has since moved out of Manalapan, lives vicariously through Rebecca’s accounts at the firehouse.

“My brother wants to come back. It’s one of the places that you never truly leave, even if you move away. You’re always around,” Rebecca stated.

As an elementary teacher for third and fourth graders, the skills she has learned from her volunteer experience have proven to be invaluable to her work. She credits her time at Gordons Corner for helping her learn how to teach and communicate with her students in a way that encourages them to be the best versions of themselves.

“Volunteering also taught me to explore and be adventurous, and be willing to take risks because you are surrounded by people who have your back, and that’s the most important thing,” said Rebecca, adding, “I love being able to try new things and all the people we get to meet.”

Gordons Corner Fire Company serves the north side of Manalapan and its surrounding areas, averaging over 560 emergency calls a year. No prior experience is needed to join Gordons Corner Fire Company. Training and gear are provided to all volunteers, and roles available within the organization include firefighter, junior firefighter, fire police and auxiliary member.

“It is an experience that will change you in the best way possible with the best people possible. You become or you experience things that you never thought you would. It’s so invigorating to be able to do it with such amazing people who have such good intentions,” said Rebecca.
